Week 13 : Ending Evaluation

     Looking back at everything that I have done over the past 4 months is amazing. How you can achieve so much in a small period of time. As I looked back at all of my shows and what I did and all the hard work that I put in on Monday and Wednesdays, I saw an immense improvement from week 1 to week 6. In week 1 you see a person that is shy and insecure in front of the camera. Move to week 6 you see someone that is confident and has personality for the viewers. After my week 3 blog I worked even harder to reach my goals, which I did and I am very proud of that. This experience has given me an outlook on my future and what my life my become. I have also found a new respect for sportscasters out there, as it is not an easy profession, they pour their hearts and their souls in their work.
     WMCT is a tremendous organization to work for. They make you comfortable from when you walk in the door til' you walk out. They teach you everything that you need to know and go slow enough for you to be able to learn at your own pace. They do not rush you into anything that you do not feel comfortable doing. Making you do coffee runs or other intern work you hear other organizations making interns do, that's not WMCT. I would recommend WMCT to anyone that wants to get a start in the television business, they are the perfect people to work for. I want to thank everyone that helped me throughout my time at WMCT, I greatly appreciate what you did for me.

Week 11: Code of Conduct

At WMCT we do not have a written code of ethics or anything real strict. We try to put the best pure product out their for our viewers and will do whatever possible to make that happen. We do have a couple rules that I have been taught as being a sportscaster and someone in the media. Always be happy and smile, be professional to the people that your talking to in your line of work, take every task seriously and with the up most respect. If you are not they will not help you and it will make your job tougher. Before you send your product out to the customer make sure that is something that you would sit down your self for the 20 minutes and watch it yourself, do not sell the product short. At WMCT we value our reputation and the product, so for a code of conduct it is that we will not allow anyone to put a bad name on WMCT. 

Tasks/Assignments

Coming into my internship I knew what my role was going to be, a sportscaster. Every Wednesday and Friday I gain a new tool that I can use when I graduate. My assignments every week is to go film highlights, write scripts, edit highlights, and on-air stand-ups. Now almost 4 months into the semester I have gained so much experience that is priceless. I feel myself getting more comfortable in front of the camera and putting out excellent work for my employer. Some of my new skills include writing scripts for "Hey Whats the Score." Worcester State University classes have helped me in this internship, by taking a public speaking class it gave me confidence going in. Also taking a media writing class has helped me with my grammar and the right way to write scripts. During my spring break I decided to go into Marlborough and film on camera. This is my best episode yet in front of the camera.

Mid Term Evaluation

3) This internship provides me with an adequate learning experience for my background. This internship will provide me with experience that is priceless. By the end of the internship I will know how to run a TV show. Filming, Editing, and production will all be assets that I will have when I leave the internship.

4) My mentor at this organization understands my goals and objectives. My mentor, Rob knows what my goals and objectives are for me at the internship. He includes me in everything we do at the show so I can do it all by myself at the end of the internship.

5) I did adequate preparation investigating the sponsoring organization and level of placement before accepting this position. I had been looking for an internship since my sophomore year in college. I went to the in internship fair not knowing what I wanted for an internship. I did not even have WMCT on my list of places to meet with but i stopped by their table and talked with them. Once I talked with them I knew this is the place that I wanted to intern and this could maybe lead to a profession to me down the line.

6) This organization expects too much work or requires more polished work than I was prepared to do. I do not see that as true with me at my internship. They make me feel comfortable and if I need help they will help me. I am not overwhelmed at all it is the right amount of work.

7) I cooperate with my colleagues in our work or to accomplish joint goals at the organization. Yes, I work with Rob very closely to get the finishing touches on our show. Then we also work well together to accomplish special features that we do on players from both Marlborugh and Assabet Valley.

8) I cope with annoying situations without losing my temper or poise? Whenever you learn something knew it may be difficult for you to understand or get the grasp of. When I came into the internship I had no experience at all with this type of business. So I told myself it may get tough at times but just remember this is the first time you have ever done this so stay poised and do not lose your temper.

9) I am eager to learn new skills. I find it as a great reward to learn new skills everyday at this internship. Everyday I walk into WMCT I am excited and want to learn more and more everyday.

10) I find something new to learn even in the most routine tasks. When Rob told me to think of some question to ask one of your special of the week. I sat down and started to think, you may think it is easy but it is tough. Rob told me a couple question and the way to go about the questions. So now I have learned a good interview strategy.

11) I consider my internship position challenging and worthy of my talents. I find this internship very challenging and have have gained so much respect for the people that do it but it feels so good when the finished product comes out and you see yourself on TV or on the computer.

12) My attitude toward colleagues and clients is helpful and concerned.  Coming into this internship I considered myself to have good people skills. After talking with all of the coaches and Athletic Directors of the schools that we cover I have gained a new attitude on how to help and talk with clients. I usually have to talk with one of them everyday so I have gained a professional way to talk with clients.

13) I easily recognize clients' needs and then try and assist them. Yes the coach's and Athletic directors may need something and I will be right there to help them, for example if they want to give their team some publicity or a certain player I will help them with that.

14) I demonstrate ease in initiating conversation with colleagues and clients.  Yes, I find it easy to talk to people. Good communication skills are one that I believe that I have and will help me in the future as you need to talk to people to get what you need in life.

15) I show confidence and poise in dealing with colleagues and clients.  I am a very confident person which leads to me having good poise when dealing with colleagues and clients. I believe it gives me an upper hand because I have no problem talking with my colleagues and clients. People skills are one of my assets that I have.

16) This organization can point to me with pride as one of their employees. I belive this to be true. Around the work place and professional I am well liked and have a good personality. I put out a good product for the viewers and represent the WMCT label with respect.

17) I approach all tasks, even low level ones, with enthusiasm and a commitment to excellence.  Thats the way that I have always been. When I do something it do it at %100. When I go every week before the camera I need that enthusiasm and commitment and that's what I do.

18) My work patterns and quality of work produced justify the time and money the firm is investing in me. My work is thorough and professional. The time and money that this firm is investing in me is well worth it for them because I am going to work as hard as I can for them to put out a good product for them.

19) I look forward to each day enthusiastically. Everyday that I go to WMCT I am excited because it is something that I love doing. I have found out that this is something I would like to do as a career. I am an over the top sports fan and like the camera so that is something that makes me look forward to every day more and more.

20) Although this internship is a short-term position, I am personally committed and involved for the present. Even though this is a short-term position it does not mean that I am less committed or involved that I would be if it is full-time. I want to see WMCT and myself succeed and if I am not committed at anytime that will not happen.

21) This internship experience has helped me clarify future goals. This internship has provided me with an outlook on my future. I came into that internship fair in November not knowing what I wanted to do with my Communication major. Now I know what I want to do. WMCT has provided me with the opportunity to be successful when I graduate.

22) Describe areas of personal interest and ability that you had not been aware of before working for this organization. I have always liked to watch TV, but now I know I like being on TV and I want to be the person that have always looked at and said "wow thats a cool job."

"Hey, What's the Score?"

The show that I host and produce along with Rob O'Keefe has taken off! Here is the first week of the show. Every week I will have a new show to blog about.

Week 5

     At WMCT there are only 4 full time workers. They all have a certain show that they are in control of. The two people I work closely with are Dan Guindon and Rob O'Keefe.

                                                        

     Dan (left) is the executive director who oversees the entire workplace and runs a couple shows. Rob (right) is who I work closely with as he produces my show Hey Whats the Score. He helps me out with learning how to produce the show. Their management structure is very relaxed. At the studio you don't need to dress up in a shirt and tie every day. They want you to be comfortable and also look nice at the same time. This is very effective as I feel people will work better when they feel comfortable. Dan and Rob make it fun to work their as they make it fun with jokes and makes me feel comfortable and making sure I'm not overwhelmed. Dan makes sure everyone knows what their position is and that way everything runs smoothly.

     For the communication method at WMCT it is very straight forward. We mostly use email to get a hold of each other and others that we need to meet with. We did go and talk to coach's and players in person and do shoots with them. WMCT post's all of their product to youtube and is all on their website. We get back to each other very quickly if we email so their is no reason to change it if its not broken.

Week 3

You need to set goals for yourself in life to be successful. At the onset of my internship I set a couple goals for myself for throughout the internship. The first goal that I set for myself was that I was going to soak up all the information that I could so that I will be a valuable commodity on the job market because of my skills that I learned at WMCT. Next I wanted to improve my social skills (Public Speaking, On-air). If I can improve both of those, when I am going to speak in front of a large crowd I won't be as nervous and I'll be much more confidant. Those were my main goals going into this internship, I guess WMCT did have a goal for me and that was that they wanted to revamp their sports program and that's why they hired me and they want it to be successful and I will be at the head of doing that along with others who will work on the projects with me. My job description their is an on-air personality that does sports coverage and will do voice overs as well.

Week 1

I have choosen to work with WMCT- TV in Marlborough, Massachusetts for my first internship. WMCT is a local TV station that broadcasts throughout Marlborough. This station is not as big as ABC or NBC but they provide just as good of a product. They run weekly and monthly programs.The station is located at 91 Main Street Suite 201 in Marlborough, in an old fire station! The station is starting to revamp their sports programming and I will be the face of it. You can check out their previous shows and what they provide at wmct-tv.com. WMCT was started all the way back in 1984 by the Prime Time Cable company. WMCT has gone through many different names weather it be WMCT channel 30 or WMCT channel 3. Today WMCT-TV has 2 stations, "M8" which broadcasts programs created by the public and WMCT which broadcasts programs created by the professional staff at WMCT. WMCT provides a great service to the community allowing any resident of Marlborough to come in and use any of their equipment. Everyone at WMCT cares about the product that goes out to the community. They like to have fun while doing it and provide a wonderful atmosphere to work in.
